OK so errrm ... fish.
Well we seem to like fish in this house, or at least I do I guess its a "Special Interest". At least thats what er indoors says.
we both have fish, I tend towards Tropical Malawi Lake Cichlids, ( especially "Haplochromis" for you enthusiasts ) while my wife leans more towards Koi in our pond out back ( read Fricken Lake ).
Koi wise we have a tendency to buy Duds - well come on! have you seen the price of these things? We have a rather excellent Koi dealer round the corner from us ( L.E Koi - Long Eaton Koi ), and he often sells fish that have scars or other imperfections cheap, so round we go .. a great way to fill your pond with beautiful fish at very little cost!
I have to be careful here I am told I have a tendancy to wax lyrical about such things as the importance of pond filtration, Filter media, Natural Plant based filtration and correct food per season etc, I find these things fascinating however, the wife thinks I'm mental and takes the piss somewhat, see why I see the importance of removing detritus such as fallen leaves from the surface of the pond, so they dont rot and cause algae ( OMG the ALGAE its such a nightmare to combat! ) she thinks I'm quite insane and obsessed, she is probably right!
A word on filters tho .. you can spend big bucks on these things, my advice... make your own, I did .. loads cheaper, and I havnt had to maintain it this year at all ( touch wood ) I intend to do a tutorial on this on this blog at some point .. so keep your eyes out.
As for my Favs the Malawi Lake Chiclids Im currently running a 300 Litre 2.5 foot deep tank with a mixture of Mbuna and Haplochromis, if it was an ideal world .. and I had a load more space, id probably run two seperate tanks, one for Mbuna one for Haplochromis, HELL who am I kidding? if it was a perfect world Id have tanks for Tanganyika and Victoria too! Again .. wifey thinks im insane.
Personal Favourites? gotta be my Nimbochromis venustus ( Giraffe Chiclid ) and my Cynotilapia Moori ( Blue Dolphin ).
A wealth of information on Malawi Chiclids can be found at http://www.malawimayhem.com.
IM going .. if she sees me yattering about fish again .. ill be in troubsies!
peace
MZT
